Mysterious black box
«

My Bulldog has a small black box, about 2 inches square, made by Lucas. It has seven terminals and shallow cooling fins. My friend's Bulldog has one identical and we have not been able to identify it via Google or any local electrics experts.
Can anyone enlighten us about it. Is it a relay, or several relays - or what? Advice from the oracles again please.

It's your on board "flight recorder" should you need it; see

Ho Ho Ho Oh no it isn't!
It's probably the wiper delay unit - if your Bulldog is a very late one or Ital based. If it is Ford based then I dunno.

Hi John,
I never new what it was for either but I believe that the car had some kind of alarm or anti-theft device fitted and removed before I bought it and always assumed it was part of that.

Photo would be handy. Sounds like part of an alarm system or rev limiter to me though.

Here are some photos. In addition the number 37800B 1190 is stamped on the device.
It is strange that my friend's Bulldog has an identical one and no one seems able to identify!
Perhaps the photos will help. Thanks to all contributors.

Yup definately a dim dip unit
Not many people ever fitted them
If its working leave it if not dont bother replacing it as not even the MOT folk ever seemed to get bothered about Dim dips
