Hi Pete
If I was you I'd contact Paul Jepson. He's ex DVLA and speaks their language, he advertises in the Kit car mags.

When I first registered my Sumo it was as a convertible Granada, he helped sort it out, but that was pre SVA.

Pete, I had the same sort of problem with an old motor bike that I bought and the Seller had lost the documents.

You need to write a letter to the DVLA. Give them the registration (I presume you know this?)
and inform them you have lost the Registration document and need a new one.
You did say 'Get it Back on the road) so they should have all the related info (Engine Number, make/model etc) on their Database.

If the car was registered correctly and all the other info is genuine, you should get a new V5 (I'm not sure if this will incur any cost?)

However... If the Car has never been registered or on the road since it was built, then you may need to go down the SVA route  Sad
And this may lead to a 'Q' Plate if you dont have the original Donor documents.

Hope this helps.

my advice would be to talk to your local dvla office and talk to the person who deals with kit conversions and registration.there is a dvla ruling which allows for kit cars which have been on the road over 10 years ago to have their v5 corrected.we went through this process with our hawthorn (shown as a marina sports on the v5),it is now shown as a pilgrim.you will need documents from 10 years ago e.g mot's ,tax discs etc.the more paperwork the better.http://www.totalkitcar.com/cgi-bin/content/exec/search.cgi?cat=17&template=index%2Findex_tech_registration_rs.htm&perpage=1&start=3 .this link should help explain things.as i said earlier talk to your local office mine (ipswich) were really helpful.

SVA has now finished, we've got the IVA now, more rules to follow and a huge price increase.

And for those you who didn't know about the SVA-IVA conversion click the link below.

http://www.ampar.com/pdfs/SVA%20to%20IVA%20leaflet.pdf

This comes into affect on 29 April 2009.
