I have an old - pre 1930 - AA badge which I was going to put on the grill of my Bulldog but I have a dilemma! Do I keep it original or renovate it? It (the badge not the car!!!) has seen better days being weathered generally but in good order other than the yellow inserts which are all but faded. What do you think?

I have a similar RAC one - faded blue but otherwise in reasonable shape on the front of my 'dog. My initial reaction is leave it as it is. I also have a similar condition "Morris Register" badge but that is now in storage in favour of an old and faded IAM badge on the badge bar.

I was given an old one in need of renovation which I intend to do. There are plenty around, so I don't think there's an issue with value.

Agreed there are enough around, but I would not want a shiney new one, but one with a patena of age and use. You might find that a really good clean up will make it look good, but not new.

I was just trying to say that it's his choice - he can renovate it and if he finds he doesn't like it, get another one off fleabay!!

Spot on. If the renovation is going that well a nice shiney one might well be a good choice.

Thanks for all the advice.
As the car is looking newish I will just clean the badge up rather than total refurbish it so it has a bit of an age feel to it . Although its 'value' is not a real issue I don't like to carry out too much work as to me its condition is part of its history and that to me does add a certain value. Also as somebody said earlier if I am not happy with the final result on the car I can keep the badge at home - as it has sentimental value - and buy another off ebay and totally refurbish that ie polish, paint etc to make better than new.
Many thanks.
Have a good Christmas and a Happy and prosperous 2009.

Actually, I'm expecting a visit from the police one day because mine says something like "Property of the AA and must be returned" on it.
It's a fair cop, guv'nor
